Voluntering and Wwoofing

Solås is a small scale, commercial and organic mountain farm. Situated 250 meters above sea level, with a spectacular view, not far from the Hardanger fjord. This is the perfect place if you would like to be close to nature.

We value diversity and quality, instead of quantity, so the experiences you can get here are many. We produce vegetables, berries and fruits in addition to our wild sheep and chickens. We also produce winter fodder for our sheep and firewood.

Firstly we need help with the vegetables, berries and fruits, but there are many other tasks, as on any farm, that could need some extra hands, like forestry work, mechanics and construction of new buildings and infrastructure.

We are establishing a permaculture garden on a separate part of the farm.We all choose this lifestyle, to live in peace and harmony with nature, with a pragmatic approach to spirituality. In addition to farming we do some foraging of wild plants, mushrooms and natural resources. We see ourselves as a part of nature and a part of humanity, what we do affects the rest of the planet.

What to expect?

We are looking for people who can operate autonomously, so you must be able to work independently after initial training. You should also be physically fit, as most of the tasks on the farm are physically though. The tasks we have are varied, depending on year and season. Planting, weeding and harvesting of vegetables, picking berries and fruits are the most common.

We also need help with general maintenance of buildings, machines and equipments. If you enjoy making food, we are sure this will be appreciated by us all, even though there are several of us with love and experience of cooking.

We prefer people who want to stay for longer periods, but are open to even weekend WWOOFers.

Accommodations are simple, a caravan with an extension with room for one person or a couple. It has heating and electricity, but no running water as of now. You can use showers in the main house and get water for drinking too. The caravan is placed at a secluded spot, away from the noise of the farm. There are also rooms available in the main house.

On your time off there are many places to visit, especially if you enjoy trekking and the experience of wild nature. The nearest lake is known for being one of the best for fishing trout and char in Norway. In the mountains behind the farm there are more lakes. A short drive will take you to the Hardanger fjord, highly prized by tourists for its stunning scenery. If you are lucky you’ll even be able to see whales hunting fish in the fjord. Having a drivers licence will give you more freedom, as most things here are only accessible by car. There are busses going here and there, but they are slow. The nearest shop is 10 minutes away, by car. The nearest city is Bergen, 1 1/2 hours by car. If you don’t have a car, we will of course help you with getting places. The people on the farm are socialising to variable degree, we all have our own homes and live our own lives, except for the work we share on the farm. Every Saturday we have a common dinner at the farmhouse. This means that you need to be comfortable on your own at times. Come as who you are! We do not discriminate people for skin colour, religion, sexual orientation or any thing else. The only thing we do not tolerate is spreading of hatred.
